Wednesday's Challenge

Thank you to everyone who commented on my blog last week! I always really appreciate your comments.
Posterous refuses me outright, and Wordpress generally doesn't like me leaving comments (although if I have managed to leave one on a particular blog - either one that slipped through the net, or that got retrieved from the Spam bin, or via Facebook - then sometimes it does allow me to leave one next time round. Weird) and last week, I couldn't even leave replies on my own blog! What IS IT with this site??
Anyway, it seems to have forgiven me now, and allowed me to say the odd thing from time to time recently.

However, it is STILL not allowing anyone/Followers to be notified of new posts... Sorry.
Please just check in now and again!

If you aren't into the 100 Word Challenge, my other post is Four Legs and a Tail are Forever

This week's  100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups is simply 'Wednesday'.

100 words (plus the prompt) on the word Wednesday.

Oh well, here goes:

'Would - Wednesday be suitable?'

The old gentleman turned to gaze out of the window. 'Wednesday,' he repeated thoughtfully. 'A day that is so unremarked, in many languages it's known simply as midweek. Yet not, I feel, unremarkable, though it carries neither the frisson of newness nor the fanfares of conclusion - just its own small solaces.' He paused. 'The Philosopher's Day,' he added. 'And signifying both betrayal and woe! It was named originally for the messengers of the gods, you know, those creatures of eloquence and cunning. And strangely, it's always coloured green in my thoughts! Yes, I think Wednesday would be eminently suitable.'

  1. Named for the messengers of the Gods, I never knew that. I'm a Gemini and we are ruled by Mercury so I find it fascinating, thank you. Your old gentleman reminds me of Sophies World!

  3. I seem to be the only person so far who is wondering "suitable for what?" I really want to know what is planned for Wednesday!

  5. I like the way you have caught the mildness of the day; it's role as a fulcrum, always on the cusp. Wednesday's may seem magical after this. Eminently suitable indeed.

  6. Ugh, predictive text has given Wednesdays a greengrocer's apostrophe. Can you edit please?

  7. This is an excellent example of the old man's thought process, I feel I know him just by reading it. The flow of word association runs smoothly, and in the end he still responds to the question, just in his own way, in his own time. Love the added touch of "colored green". Well done!

  8. Thank you for your comments. In my mind there were two strands to this piece. One - the superficial layer - the various roots, meanings and asociations of the word Wednesday. Underlying that was the significance of this particular Wednesday, but I hoped to leave the possibilities of that significance open by not giving any background. In this instance I didn't want to create Truman Capote's 'absolute and final orange'. I hoped something of the old gentleman might come through, which would help suggest different options, but I intentionally didn't give any shape to the other person. I hope it left you interpreting the gaps in whatever way you see fit, and wasn't just annoying! (But yes, it did spring from a specific scenario in my head.)

  9. I picture him sitting there with Death in a Terry Pratchett novel.

  10. What a wonderful illustrative 100 words. I love it. I think of it a pale insipid green. Love the colour with the gods though! Great to see you on the 100WCGU!

  11. I agree with Julia. I love the color and the mention of the gods. I learned that Wednesday comes from Odin, but I didn't know about the messenger gods. Lovely writing!
