Picture it in your Own Words - Regret

This week's photo challenge is Regret

I have 3 pictures.
Two are on the same topic, the third is different, but also a matter of regret.

                                                                             Regret

My beautiful elm tree has finally died of Dutch Elm Disease. It is being cut down. I will miss it more than I can say. This is what a magnificent old tree is reduced to.

The bare bones of my lovely tree. The elms are all gone

The snowdrops are nearly over. One of my favourite flowers gone for another year...

Do go and have a look at some of the other wonderful, interesting, different pictures entered for the challenge!

If you like cats, have a look at my post, Cat-atonic Napping!

    1. Sadly not. The tree is dead. We are in the process of removing the main trunks. But thank you for the thought!

  3. Oh that terrible dutch elm. Nothing you did could have saved the tree. I cut little blocks out of a branch for my kids to remember my favorite climbing tree.

  4. Now this is a great interpretation of this week's challenge! I always hate seeing trees cut down. Perhaps you can plant another in its place?

  6. It is like loosing a friend, loosing agrand, great tree like that. Hollowed Elm wood was used for draining boards & drains as it doesn't rot in water. In the museum of London there is a Roman elm drain that remained in place working as a drain untill the 20th century.
It has been observed that sometimes the cut ones sucker and the beatles can't eat the young ones so they have been found (post beatle) in long lines of clones runing through hedgerows, keeping their heads down, waiting for their time to come again.

    1. Yes, the tree surgeon who cut them down told us the same. Apparently the 're growths' are fine until they get to a certain height. The bettle or whatever it is that causes DED flies at that height only. But apparently there are some young elms that seem to have developed an inbred immunity to the disease - JOY! - so we may yet get them back again in years to come.
I hope so, they are such beautiful trees.

  7. I love the top picture. For something dead, the colours are so alive.

  8. I know how you feel i recently had to take down two beautiful China Doll trees that the previous owners had planted too close to the house and they were causing damage. It was a tough decision, and i do miss them.

  9. When I was one year old we moved to our house. My parents planted an apricot-tree, but it was too cold and 5 years later it died in a cold winter. I still have a part of its bark. Now over 20 years later the joy that my parents planted a tree for me outweighs the regret I've lost it. But I still like trees, so I am sad for you, that you have lost yours!

    1. Yes, I agree with you. That would be a joy! Such a lovely thing to do for a child - something they will only appreciate when they grow up. A friend of mine's grandfather planted an avenue of poplars for her when she was born. She walked down it on her wedding day, on the arm of her new husband, by which time the trees were tall and elegant and beautiful. You would never forget something like that!
I will definitely keep some souvenirs from my poor old elm.
Not least the memories of it.
Thank you for telling me about your apricot tree.
